Colonialism is central to the life, culture, and history of our people; and a number of Filipino novelists (namely, Jose Rizal, Linda Ty-Casper, F. Sionil Jose, Maximo M. Kalaw, Juan C. Laya, Bienvenido N. Santos, Stevan Javellana, Edilberto K. Tiempo, Wilfrido D. Nolledo, Ninotchka Rosca, Miguel Syjuco, and Gina Apostol) have looked at the various permutations of that colonial trauma. This book traces these authors’ arc of resistance from Rizal’s Noli Me Tangere (1887) to Apostol’s Insurrecto (2018), spanning more than 130 years, three colonial periods, and one post-independence era. It finally does what other former colonized nations have been doing in their own national narratives: to reclaim their identity and to proclaim their sense of self-worth.
